analysing previous student work digipacks

Indiya - In your own words.

Strengths
Firstly, she has stuck to a limited amount of colours, not overflowing the panels. This makes it seem less 'busy' which draws the audiences attention. the colours use of white black and purple are well suited, not only to the digipack but also to the artist, as from a consumers view i can gather instantly that this is a sort of R&B production aimed at a female target audience.
Secondly, there are three clear close up pictures of the artist, the fourth in which i shall go in depth in the weakness. the images allow the audience to view the artist from each angle, including the front and the side.
The positioning is well fitted, as it does not cover the artists face or image in any way and the fonts used are two simple fonts that match eachother.
Lastly, all aspect of the panels are covered such as the copy right, barcode, title, tracklist etc.

Weaknesses
The image that is filtered is a main weakness as filtered images are less effective as a clear image. the idea of the digipack is for the artist to be recgonised and a filtered image does not work well not only for recognition but also the effect it has on the product. This is because the rest of the pictures are clear close ups and the filtered image spontaneous.
Secondly, the positioning of the text where the CD would be placed should have been at the bottom of the picture, rather than covering part of the artists face.

Stephanie Jackson - Rumours

Strengths
This student has decided to go for a more simplistic approach. The yellow/brown colour is used all round, not using it in a unusual manner. All aspects are covered, such as the barcode, tracklist, clear images. Also, the positiong is very good as the front panel has a clear picture with text underneath and the tracklist is positioned well in the empty space next to the artists face. the CD panel is very simple, not using images but only text and simple colours. the text is two simple fonts and does not consist of much text which is ideal for a digipack.

Weaknesses
Firstly, the artist has used three pictures with a different type of look. One with her hair down, one tied up and straight, and the other with her hair down but flicked back. It'll take the audience atleast two looks for them to realise that it is the same person, as all three pictures make the artist look like three different people unless closely looked at. Also, the unnatural colours of the picture does not allow a clear picture, as the filter can be seen as used too much, although it has worked well. Lastly, the word Rumours in the CD panel has been partly blocked out and could have been position better.

Poppy Power - Lights out

Strengths
The colour theme is well created, as black and red are a mix of colours that create a good effect. One aspect of the Front cover that is different to the other students work is the positiong of the title and artist name. Rather than putting it on the bottom of the page, she has put it on the top corner in a simple font and a simple colour text. Also, the back of the CD cover has been created well. the picture of the artist is placed on one side of the cover leaving enough space to place the tracklist without overlapping eachother. She has also split the back into 'CD' and 'DVD', making it more interactive than a normal CD cover.

Weaknesses
There are not much weaknesses in this cover. However, there are two that caught my eye.

  • The close ups are very good, but could have been better if the artist looked directly at the camera which would allow the audience to be attracted towards the product.
  • The red box on the front of the CD cover with the rating etc does not have to be there, as that could be placed in the advertisment poster.
